The San Antonio Chapter of the Federal Bar Association, the Bexar County Women's Bar Association, and District 5 of the Paralegal Division of the State Bar of Texas, are pleased to invite you to a program hosting girls participating in the Law Magnate Program at Fox Tech High School for a pizza mentoring luncheon.
This year's luncheon will occur on Friday, March 2, 2007, beginning at 11:30 a.m. and ending by 1:30 p.m.
We welcome you to take an hour or so from your busy schedule, join us for free pizza and beverages (purchased by the San Antonio Chapter of the FBA), sit at a table with a group of girls, visit with them about what you do for a living, your educational background, the struggles you may have faced in achieving your career goals, and answer any questions they may have about the career choices available to them.
The program is geared to encourage the girls to stay in school and do what it takes to succeed in spite of pressure from peers.
The annual pizza luncheon has been very well-received and successful - the girls appreciate the opportunity to talk informally with adults about education, training, and employment and the adults have expressed satisfaction with the earnestness, high spirits, and interest of the students!

Please join us!

If you are able to attend, please RSVP by e-mailing FBA Outreach Chair Beth Smith at beth@egsmithlaw.com by 12:00 noon on Monday, February 26, 2007, so that we are sure to have sufficient pizza!

If you have any questions about the program, please feel free to call Beth Smith at 731-9177 or FBA San Antonio Chapter President Judge Pam Mathy at 472-6350.

Constitution Day

Dear Fellow FBA Chapter members,

Volunteers Invited!

As you may know, the Chapter is sponsoring a Constitution Day program at Fox Tech High School.
The program will occur on Thursday, September 29, 2005.
There will be two presentations, one during the class period from 1:40 p.m. and the second during the class period from 2:38 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The presentations will occur in the Law classroom.
A group of 11th and 12th grade students will participate in each session.
We plan to play a recorded video titled "Our Constitution," which is a conversation with United States Supreme Court Justices Sandra Day O'Connor and Stephen Breyer taped on June 5, 2005. The classroom-ready video, made available through the support of the Administrative Office of the United States Courts, the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania, and the American Bar Foundation, features the Justices taking questions from Philadelphia area high school students. The Justices discuss why we have and need a constitution; what federalism is; how implicit and explicit rights are defined; and how separation of powers is designed to ensure that none of the three branches of government obtains too much power.
Following the 30-minute video, Chapter members will discuss: federalism, separation of powers, individual rights, and the importance of a written constitution. Discussion guides for each of these topics have been prepared.
If you are interested in volunteering to participate in either one of the two presentations scheduled for the afternoon of Thursday, September 29, 2005:

1. on or before 12:00 noon, Monday, September 26, 2005, please contact United States Magistrate Judge Pam Mathy by sending an e-mail to pamela_mathy@txwd.uscourts.gov ;
2. please indicate whether you are available for one or both sessions; and
3. please provide a telephone number and fax number.

Thank you!

Sincerely,
Pam Mathy
Chapter President Elect

On February 4, 2005, the Chapter hosted a pizza lunch for the freshman and sophomore girls who are enrolled in the Fox Tech High School Law Magnate Program. The program was co-sponsored with the Bexar County Women's Bar Association. Magistrate Judges Pam Mathy and Nancy Nowak helped develop this program whereby the girls are brought to the Judicial Training Center and given an opportunity to visit and hear women who work in the legal field talk about their career. Women from the U.S. Attorney's office, U. S. Probation Office, U.S. District Clerk's Office, U.S. Marshall's Office, and private practitioners and para-professionals spoke about career options and the struggles that many of the women had to obtain their career goals. Over 90 girls and 30 women in the legal profession attended. The program is geared to encourage the girls to stay in school and do what it takes to succeed in spite of pressure from peers.

On April 29, 2005, the Chapter treated the freshman and sophomore girls at Fox Tech, and their teachers and school administrators, to a Law Day Luncheon jointly held with the Bexar County Women's Bar Association. The luncheon speaker was State District Judge Monica Gurerro who made inspiring remarks about her own education. The girls also had the opportunity to visit with women in the legal profession who mixed in with the students at the lunch tables. The Chapter split the luncheon costs and also funded all of the prize money given to three winners of the Law Day Poster contest announced at the luncheon ($100 to the first place winner, $75 to the second place winner, and $50 to the third place winner for a total of $225 in prize money). As part of the Law Day program, Fox Tech High School students were shown a videotape prepared by the State Bar of Texas on the history of the jury system and were invited to prepare relevant posters depicting visually the significance of juries. A member of the Bexar County Women's Bar Association and Chapter Board member Susan Kilgore served as judges of the posters, selecting the top three posters, and assisted in recognizing the winning students and posters at the April 29,, 2005 Law Day luncheon.
